Well it’s Suffrage Sunday- and not just today, as we celebrate 100 years of the emancipation of some women the excitement is building as Off The Shelf celebrates 100 years of partial suffrage- there are some amazing events scheduled between now and 27th October!! Here’s your starter for ten below!!
Do you believe in reincarnation- well if you are interested in feminist afterlives, book your ticket to see Suffrage Afterlives what happened after the vote was won a panel discussion featuring such notable figures such as Rachel Reeves Leeds West MP, and chaired by local academic Dr Julie Gottlieb- just time to come alive after 5 and perhaps grab a few new season fashion purchases before the discussion starts at 6pm on Tuesday 9th October at 6pm at the Town Hall.
Where on earth could you combine Poland with Barnsley? Well, take a pit stop on Wednesday 10th October from 7pm at The Studio University of Sheffield to hear Flis Callow and Caroline Poland talk about how they set up and sustained a women’s Pit camp outside Houghton Main Colliery in Barnsley in January 1993.
All these and many more events are in store before the main event-Suffrage Sunday 14th October where a host of talks in various venues from Professor June Purvis A Biography of Christabel Pankhurst from 11am at the Auditorium University of Sheffield Student’s Union- Die Suffragette from 1pm at SHU Void Cinema, Hearts and Minds by Jane Robinson from 3pm at The Cadman Room Millenium Gallery, swiftly followed by Suffragettes on Film from 5pm same location- then the final instalment in this terrific trilogy- Deeds not words Helen Pankhurst the great grand-daughter of illustrious Suffragette leader Emmeline will be leading the charge from 7pm in the aptly titled Millennium Gallery.
