A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer: Writing to Stop Violence Against Women and Girls is a ground-breaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights, edited by Eve Ensler and Mollie Doyle. On Friday 15 February, these monologues will be performed by a cast of local women and men as part of V-Day Sheffield 2013.

Time and location: Friday 15th February 2013 at 7.45pm (doors open 7.00pm) at the Pennine Lecture Theatre, Sheffield Hallam University City Campus, Howard Street, Sheffield S11WB.

Refugee women are more likely to face violence than any other group of
women in the world, according to UN statistics
90% of girls in Mali and Egypt are victims of female genital mutilation
90% of women in prison have experienced violence in their life
50% of women in England and Wales will experience violence,
sexual assault or stalking in their lifetime
More than 4,000 women have been trafficked into the UK

28 January 2013: Women’s Group book discussion

On 28 January 2013 the SFN Women’s Group will be discussing Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine, who has a PhD in cognitive neuroscience. The book debunks the pseudo-scientific claims that differences between the sexes are hard-wired into our brains: essential reading for feminists!

All self-defining women are welcome to join in, whether or not you’ve read the book.

Monday 3 December 2012: Christmas Social and Talk on ‘Women and Pop Music’.

Women’s group meeting, 7.15pm – 9.00pm, Quaker Meeting House. All self-defining women welcome.

Bridget Coulter will discuss her recent research into the representation of women in pop music, exploring the work of solo female performers. The objectification of women’s bodies in pop music is currently a highly controversial topic, with many arguing that music videos present women as subordinate sex objects and encourage violence against women.

This talk will examine the work of Katy Perry and Beyoncé, exploring the use of pornographic imagery in their music videos, as well as artists who have used pop music to challenge patriarchal notions of femininity. Bridget will also discuss her qualitative focus group research, which investigated young people’s attitudes to women and how they perceive gender in music videos.

Please bring food to share!

Sheffield Reclaim the Night, Friday 30 November

The first Reclaim the Night march and rally in Sheffield in over 15 years will be held on Friday 30 November 2012! The event is a chance to say no to male violence against women and to assert your right to use public space without fear and abuse. Find out more here.

7.00pm MARCH for women only. Assemble outside the Cathedral from 7.00pm to leave at 7.15pm.

Anyone who defines as a woman is welcome to join in.

If you do not define as a woman but experience discrimination because you are perceived as female, you are equally welcome to join.

Also open to male carers and dependents.

Bring placards, chants and winter woolies!

8.30pm RALLY open to all. Coffee Revolution, Sheffield University Students’ Union.

If you can’t make it to the march, you are still very welcome to attend the rally.

Speakers include: Kat Banyard, founder of UK Feminista, Hollaback! Sheffield, Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Counselling Service, Vida and writer and activist Philippa Willitts.

Monday 5 November women’s group meeting: the Magdalene laundries

SFN Women’s Group will be joined by Chrissy Meleady, who will be speaking about the Magdalene laundries in Ireland.

Chrissy is an International Humanitarian and Chief Exec of Early Years Equality. She founded Sheffield Children’s Centre, was a Human Rights Commissioner and Chief Exec of Sheffield Racial Equality Council & of South Yorkshire Equalities and Anti-discrimination Service.

She authored ‘Righting The Wrongs-the Magdalene Laundries. A Time for Truth & Restorative Justice’, a discussion document submitted to the Holy See, Vatican City 2012.

The Magdalene laundries were run by the Catholic church in Ireland from the early 19th century until 1996. Around 30,000 mostly young and poor girls/women, generally considered ‘fallen women’ – mainly women who had had children out of wedlock – were sent there to work, effectively as slave labour.

Conference: Child Abuse and Pornography

SFN is pleased to announce that Gail Dines, radical feminist and Professor of Sociology and Women’s Studies at Wheelock College, USA, will be speaking at a conference on child abuse and pornography on Friday 23 Novermber 2012 in Sheffield (10.30 – 2.30) along with Lisa Markham, an SFN member and consultant in working with sex offenders.

The conference is open to all, whether working in the field or not.

The Sheffield Fairness Commission is holding a public event on Saturday 8 September, where Sheffield residents will have the opportunity to give their views on the Commission’s emerging ideas on how to tackle inequalities and increase fairness in the city. We want to make sure feminists’ voices are heard!
